Question

There are 2 lengths of cord. Each can burn in exactly 1 hour. They're not necessarily the same length or width as each other. They're also not of uniform width (may be wider in middle than the end), thus burning half the cord is not necessarily 1/2 an hour. Using the cords work out when 45 minutes has elapsed.

Answer

If you light both ends of one rope it will burn in exactly a 1/2 hour. Thus burn one rope from both ends and the other rope from only one end. Once the one rope (which is burning from both ends) finally burns out (and you know 1/2 hour has elapsed, you know that the other rope (which is burning from one end only) has exactly 1/2 hour left to burn. Since you only want 45 minutes, light the second end of the rope. This remaining piece will burn in 15 minutes, thus totalling 45 minutes.

Question

Two men build similar houses and both forget an important item. They each call the same hardware store and order the missing items. They are quoted these prices: one will cost them $2, two will cost them $2, twelve will cost them $4 and a hundred & forty-four will cost $6. What was it they needed?

Answer

They both forgot to add address numbers to their houses. If each individual number cost them $2, then one (the number 1) will cost $2., two (the number 2) will also cost $2 etc. the number 0ne forty four (1, 4, 4.) Is three digits, and so costs 6 dollars.
